HISTORY
It is considered to be the oldest temple dating back over two thousand years. The site of the site was called "Thiruvanmiyakam" and in time it was called "Thiruvanmiyur" as the Valmiki sage, who composed the Ramayana at this site, got a glimpse of Lord Shiva. The origin of the temple is known as Thyagaraja and Ambal Tripurasundari. Lord Shiva is known as "Marisavasvar" if he teaches the cures of the tamil sage, the healing properties of human herbs and the methods of medicine.
According to legends, Lord Vashishtha worshiped Lord Shiva, Indra gave his goddess Kamadhenu to Lord Vasishtha. Vashihtar cursed Kamadhenu who once did not give milk to Lord Shiva, Kamadhenu lost all his powers and became a global cow. Vashishtar said that Kamadhenu should not curse the Vashihtar and the worship of Lord Shiva so that all the lost powers can be restored. Accordingly, Kamadhenu daily milked the Shivalinga and worshiped and regained its powers. Thus, the name of the temple is also called "Pallava Nath". The Lord Shiva is looking westward as a devotee of "Upper" Dikshitar returns to the scene. Seeing here, Kamadhenu jumped on the shrine of the temple. It is said that the identify of Kamadhenu's leg hoof can still be seen on the Shivalinga.
