SRI MAHADEVAR TEMPLE

Ettumanoor Sri Mahadevar Temple is located in Ettumanoor, Kottayam district in the state of Kerala. Karunamoorthy is Lord Shiva who has mercy on all living beings. HISTORY

The Ettumanoor Mahadevar Temple consisdered to be the oldest temple in the state. The lord of this temple is called Lord Shiva Mahadeva. According to the temple legends, a sage named Kara Prakasar used to perform penance for Lord Shiva in the area where the temple is located to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva to atone for his sins. Lord Shiva, who appeared before him, himself gave a Shivalingam to sage Karaprakasa. the sage received it and established it in the temple. That lingam is worshiped by devotees in the name of Mahadeva. the town is also known as Ettumanoor as Lord Shiva took him to Karaprakasar shiva, who was deer - shaped by his yoga power.

Legend has it that the sage Vyasa, who wrote the Mahabharata, worshiped Lord Shiva in this temple.It is said that Adisankar composed his famous Soundarya Lahari song in this temple. The history of the temple says that the present temple was built by the Pandyan King as a token of his gratitude for the Removal of the evil spirits in the body of the Pandyan King Chandra Baskaran during the 15th century worship at the temple.

SPECIALITY

A special feature of the Ettumanoor Temple is the lamp that has been burning continuously at the entrance of the temple for the last 450 years. This is called Valliya lamp in Malayalam. Devotees claim that the ink under this lamp has the property of resolving all the imperfections of the eye.
